For setup and installation issues, here are some common mistakes that are easily rectified. Please read carefully if you are having problems as many of these common problems are listed below.

Registration

  • To register and/or activate your VAST service, you need to activate the smartcard (included inside your set top box - simply fold down the front flap to reveal). Make sure you are receiving signal to your set top box (channel 800, or ABC/SBS) prior to registering, as failure to do so will result in an unsuccessful activation.

Clear line of sight

  • A clear line of sight to the sky is required. Stand back from your dish and imagine an invisible beam from your dish to the sky and if there is an object in the way, even partial, try another location.

Attaching the arm to the dish

  • When attaching the arm to the dish, use the bolt holes provided that give approximately a 6cm gap between the arm and the bottom of the dish itself.

Setting the tripod level

  • There is a bubble on top of the tripod pole. Adjust the legs by loosening the wing-nuts on each leg individually to position the bubble in the center of the circle. This ensures your dish is flat and is the first step in setting up correctly.

Mounting the dish on tripod

  • When mounting the dish and mount to the tripod, ensure that the mounting bracket sits at the top of the pole by using the small lip on the inside of the mount. Do not fix the mount half way down the shaft.
LNB (the thing on the end of the arm)

  • The LNB needs to have the 'circular end' facing the dish and the cable end on the outside.

Adjusting the LNB skew (twisting left or right)

  • All LNB's have a positive and negative setting (referred to as 'skew') and there will be adjustment required depending on your location. If you look closely, there are small nodules located on the inner ring. Each nodule represents 5 degrees.

Setting the dish angle

  • The angle of the dish is possibly the most important part of the setup. To measure correctly, place the magnetic angle meter (removable) on the arm with the word Access at the top. Adjust the dish until the red line above the word Access meets the desired angle. Remove the meter once you have successfully aligned the dish.

Digital satellite finder (aka 'The Marriage Saver')

  • Pressing the ‘Info’ button (bottom right of meter) displays an overlay with a blue line and a green line. The GREEN line is most important. When aligning the dish, the GREEN signal quality line needs to be at least 65%. This ensures that by the time your signal travels down the cable and through any connections, there is still enough strength for your box to detect and scan in the channels.

  • The LNB is more than likely set in the wrong position. Double check that your LNB is set correctly and remember that 'zero' is set at the top of the LNB holder, where the small join is located. It may also mean you're on the wrong satellite, perhaps the data setellite which is also close to the VAST satellite.

Can't get a picture on TV

  • If you are getting a message on your TV along the lines of 'no signal' or no 'input selected', it is not a VAST signal problem (VAST errors are specific codes eg E-19-4), rather a TV input selection. How is your VAST receiver connected to your TV? Are you using an HDMI cable or a Red/White/Yellow AV cable? Have you selected the appropriate input on your TV? If you are using an HDMI cable, for example, you need to have the correct HDMI input selected on your TV.
